Periods Should Never Be a Barrier to Dignity
Menstruation is a normal part of life, yet for many girls and young women it can come with embarrassment, misinformation, stigma and limited access to menstrual products and accurate information.
Hedhi Bora is Great Ladies Organization's menstrual health and dignity initiative designed to help adolescent girls and young women understand their menstrual health, access essential supplies and feel confident talking about their periods.
Through school drives, community activities, educational sessions and consultative meetings, Hedhi Bora creates spaces where menstruation can be discussed openly and without shame. The program combines practical menstrual health education with efforts to address the social and economic barriers that can make periods difficult for girls to manage.
The Challenge We Are Addressing
For some girls, menstruation can mean worrying about whether they have enough sanitary products, where they can change safely or whether they will be teased because they are on their period.
Myths and misconceptions can make these challenges worse. When menstruation is treated as something embarrassing or something that should not be discussed, girls may hesitate to ask questions or seek help when they need it.
Hedhi Bora works to replace silence and stigma with practical knowledge, dignity and supportive conversations.
What We Do
Hedhi Bora uses community-centered approaches to make menstrual health information and support more accessible to girls and young women.
Providing accurate, practical information about menstruation, menstrual hygiene and wellbeing.
Supporting girls with essential menstrual products through school and community distribution activities.
Creating safe spaces where girls can ask questions and talk about menstruation without shame.
Challenging harmful myths and attitudes that make girls feel ashamed of a normal biological process.
Bringing menstrual health education and dignity support directly to girls in learning environments.
Engaging parents, caregivers and communities in conversations around menstrual health and dignity.
More Than Sanitary Products
Menstrual dignity is about more than having access to pads. Girls also need reliable information, supportive adults, safe environments and the confidence to talk about their menstrual health.
Hedhi Bora therefore combines practical support with education and conversations that challenge the shame surrounding periods. By creating spaces where girls can speak openly, the program helps make menstrual health a normal part of conversations about health and wellbeing.
A period should never be a source of shame. Every girl deserves the knowledge, products and support she needs to manage her menstrual health with dignity.
Taking Menstrual Health to Schools and Communities
Hedhi Bora reaches girls through school-based activities, community festivals, menstrual health drives and consultative meetings. These activities create opportunities for girls to receive information, access menstrual products and participate in conversations about their experiences.
The approach also recognizes that lasting change requires more than working directly with girls. Families, caregivers, schools and communities all have a role to play in creating environments where menstruation is understood and treated with dignity.
Our Reach
Great Ladies has incorporated menstrual health and dignity into its wider work with adolescent girls and young women. The organization reports distributing more than 400 dignity kits quarterly through its menstrual health activities.
During a Menstrual Hygiene Day dignity drive in Kisumu, Great Ladies reported distributing more than 350 kits across schools while combining the distribution with educational forums, parent engagement and safe-space discussions.

Hedhi Bora in Action
Menstrual health education is most powerful when girls can participate, ask questions and access practical support. These moments capture the community-centered approach behind Great Ladies' menstrual health work.
Why Menstrual Dignity Matters
When girls have access to menstrual products and accurate information, they are better positioned to manage their periods with confidence. But access alone is not enough.
Girls also need environments where menstruation is not treated as something dirty, embarrassing or inappropriate to discuss. Changing these attitudes can help girls feel more comfortable seeking information and support when they need it.
Hedhi Bora works toward a future where periods are understood as a normal part of life and no girl feels she has to hide, feel ashamed or face her period without support.
